In 1900, her first and only sibling, Arthur Houston, was born. During 1913, Rawlings father, which whom she was very close, died on January 31. After her high school graduation in 1914, she proceed with her mother and brother to Madison, Wisconsin, where she enrolled at the University of Wisconsin.
